Red Cross – Winterization kit

This project was a part of the Building Technologies in Extreme Climates and Conditions subject at the University of Technology in Eindhoven. The task was to design or improve a winterization kit for refugee tents used by Red Cross and Medicins Sans Frontiers.

After thorough research and analysis of all aspects that can influence the design of the tent or its parts, our team decided to design a room within the current winterization kit. In other words, we designed a room inside a room. The idea was to create a compact room that would not require additional heating and could be heated through the body heat of inhabitants. The winter room is primarily designed as a sleeping area during the night and a play area for the children during the day. The size of the winter room is set to accommodate two adults and three children.

The design contains two material variants, the first one is made from polyester woven fabric and reflective-foil-air-bubble sandwich insulation panels, and the second one is made from polyester woven fabric and hollow fiber.

Details

A fast and simple assembly is achieved thanks to the use of adjustable straps and plastic toggles which will be fastened to the current tent structure.
