This two-generation family house with a luthier workshop is located next to the village common area in Trhovy Stepanov in Central Bohemia and is designed with low energy. It lies on a south-facing slope with a view of the southern part of the village, adjacent forests, and farm fields. The village has a long tradition of markets, which is also obvious from its name, “trh” in Czech means market. The main task was to bring back the long-vanished crafts and the markets to this area by revitalizing the village center and filling free plots with houses with additional functions.

Given the requirements and location, the main aim was to introduce a bold, modern and innovative architecture that would at the same time represent the old traditional way of building in rural areas and the contemporary trends in architecture that would not put more pressure on the environment. In other words, my aim was to establish a dialogue between the old and the new.

The added function and the shape were inspired by maple trees that prevail in this area and are also used for manufacturing violins and other musical instruments.

As a result, the proposed building combines all set aesthetic and environmental principles. Those principles are a random rural character with courtyard, saddle roof contours, roof tilt lower than or equal to 45 degrees, traditional materials, and application of the Golden ratio and angle.
